Books To Prisoners (BTP), located in Seattle, Washington, is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that was founded in the early 1970s and provides free books to prisoners in the United States. BTP believes that books are tools for learning and opening minds to new ideas and possibilities. By sending books to prisoners, we hope to foster a love of reading and encourage the pursuit of knowledge and self-improvement. BTP receives 600 to 800 requests for books each month. Volunteers work two evenings a week opening letters, finding books in our collection that correspond to the requests, and wrapping and mailing parcels.
BTP has three associate organizations: Books to Prisoners Bellingham, Books To Prisoners Portland, and Books To Prisoners Olympia. These support groups assist in answering letters, mailing packages, and soliciting book donations, but they maintain separate finances and financial records. BTP is not associated with any other organizations called Books To Prisoners.
