Palang Thai is a Thailand-based non-profit organization dedicated to empowering grassroots communities and small entrepreneurs to use environmentally responsible energy in ways that support sustainable development and participatory democracy.
To change the energy industry in the Mekong region, Palang Thai operates at many levels. Research papers and workshops feature and attract specialists; direct outreach to communities and small entrepreneurs builds working relationships in the field that can inform and influence policy; outreach to the general public through media creates a "pull" for change. Some of the project's greatest impacts come through cultivated connections with – and analysis provided to – decision-makers in government, utilities, and NGOs.
The Border Green Energy Team (BGET): providing hands-on appropriate technology training and renewable energy to village innovators in ethnic minority areas on both sides of the Thai/Burma border.
Public interest energy policy analysis: Project leaders work with Thai NGOs and government agencies to analyze electricity policy and practice from a public interest perspective. Their efforts include:
- Focus on electricity privatization, restructuring and renewable energy policy;
- Helping to develop successful injunction against illegal public offering of shares in electric monopoly utility EGAT;
- Providing analysis and testimony to Thai National Economic and Social Advisory Council (NESAC), the Thai Senate, Energy Policy Planning Office (EPPO), and Department of Alternative Energy and Efficiency (DEDE), environmental NGOs, and consumer groups;
- Publishing articles in academic journals, industry magazines, and local press including Pacific Affairs, Refocus, Home Power, Far Eastern Economic Review, Krungthep Turakij, Matichon, Prachachart Turakij, The Nation, and Financial Times of Asia.
